Yak is heavy, heavy, heavy. Not just any heavy, but Blue Cheer heavy. MC5 heavy. Amps pushed past the breaking point heavy. This record is physically incapable of being quiet. Smashing drums and low end fuzz blast out a groove that almost asks you to dance on the manic “No.” Stuttering distortion blows up the snotty glam of “Alas Salvation” like the MC5 ripping through a Sweet song. The sheer electric brutality of the first two tracks is more than enough to make for a worthwhile listen, but it is the final track that launches this EP into space! “Out on a Limb” starts out mellow, but builds so slowly and subtly that it becomes full on madness seemingly out of nowhere. It can hold its own with almost anything Syd Barrett did in the same vein. After two tracks of relentless heaviness, this is the one with the magical groove.
