Album cover for Akufen "Fabric 17"

I love experiencing how different DJs navigate the peaks and valleys that are essential to great mixes. The 2004 Fabric set from Akufen (nee Marc Leclair) demonstrates how one creative song choice can shape an entire set.

The first few tracks establish a glitchy mood, and the equipment complaints and Joe Walsh references of “Little Tiny 1/8 Inch Jack” cement a lighthearted vibe. Then track 8 drops and we hit that first peak.

“Smoke on the Water” is a novelty cover by Senor Coconut and his Orchestra, the latin-tinged alter ego of German producer Uwe Schmidt. I generally hate novelty songs and I’m not a Deep Purple fan, but when “Smoke” appears 20 minutes into Akufen’s mix, I can’t help but find a smile that lights up my whole body.

My joy was less about “Smoke” and more about how Leclair placed it in the set. The way he established a mood then dropped us into the first peak is truly exceptional DJing.

This is a strong set of minimalist electronic dance music. It’s not about novelty tunes, yet one novelty tune is a surprise that helps turn Fabric 17 into an excellent microhouse mix.
