A stack of CDs that I haven't listened to

Amelie Lens – Fabric Presents Amelie Lens / Deep Dish – Global Underground 021 Moscow / Darren Emerson – Global Underground 020 Singapore / Danny Tenaglia – Global Underground 004 Athens: I was on a bit of a GU kick this week (with one of my favorite Fabric mixes thrown in) as I navigated some tough deadlines at work.

Taylor Swift – Midnights: Some thoughts on my first full week with Midnights:

  1. Most of the cursing sounds awkward, like a kid trying on a four-letter word for size; it rarely adds to the songs, and it sometimes takes away.
  2. Awkward cursing aside, “Snow on the Beach” is the first song on Midnights that I’ve fallen in love with.
  3. “Anti-hero” channels Kate Bush, which is a pairing I never thought I’d hear but I absolutely love.
  4. In “Mastermind,” Taylor sings that no one wanted to play with her as a little kid, so she’s been scheming like a criminal ever since. This week, I heard about one of Vivek Murthy’s talks, where he shared a personal story of feeling lonely as a little kid. Hearing a pop superstar and the surgeon general talk about the same thing created an interesting thematic intersection.
  5. I love Taylor for her love songs and the moments where sings about triumphing over impossible odds. I don’t much care for Taylor the victim, though. This album has more of the latter than I hoped it would.
