Listening Journal: February 12 – 18

I took a break for a few months, mostly because making the thumbnails and spam comments became a barrier. I’m going to see if skipping the thumbnails makes it easier to post these weekly.

Moderat – Moderat II: These guys are contenders for my “10 favorite electronic artists” list, but I rarely listen to them and this is the only one of their records that I own. Despite that, their albums are always like crawling under a warm blanket on a cool night.

Chelsea Wolfe – She Reaches Out to She Reaches Out to She: I generally like David Sitek’s production work so I gave this a listen on a recent flight. The ambient noise of the plane, the night sky, and my exhaustion combined to make me love the record on my first listen. On my second listen, though, I was bored by the overly despondent songwriting that feels too much like bad goth. The jury’s out on this one, but it warrants at least one more openminded listen.

Laurel Halo – Atlas: I’ve listened to this a bunch of times now, and while I like it every time, I can never remember why. It’s strange for a record to make such a positive impression on me yet be so forgettable.

Grateful Dead – Truckin’ up to Buffalo, July 4 1989: I took about six months off from updating my listening journal and didn’t listen to the Dead at all, so it’s odd that I’m picking up right where I left off, in the Brent Mydland era. There’s a joyous energy in this show that’s fantastic.

Deep Dish – Yoshiesque: Dubfire and Sharam pushed me a little too far out of my comfort zone back when I was first getting into DJ music, but I’ve grown increasingly enamored with Deep Dish over the past decade or so. I just added Yoshiesque to my collection, and I’m kicking myself for showing up 25 years late for this mix.

Old friends who made it into rotation this week: All Hands_Make Light – Darling the Dawn
