Ben Frost – AURORA: I’m not sure how I missed out on Ben Frost for the past 15 years, especially given the constant presence of Tim Hecker in my ears. On first listen, “Nolan” stands out in a big way.
Tim Hecker – Ravedeath, 1972: Despite being one of his most highly regarded albums, I’ve had a difficult time getting into Ravedeath over the years. This week was a completely opposite reaction: I turned it off near the end because I was overwhelmed by its intensity.
David Gray – White Ladder: I have fond memories of this record, both for the music and the experiences it accompanied. A friend was listening to it this week so I spent some time with it as well. It holds up, two decades later, and the lyrics have a depth I missed in my 20s.
Dermot Kennedy – Without Fear: I don’t know if it’s a good or bad thing that I heard “Power Over Me” in the grocery store, but it prompted me to dig into this record again, and that’s definitely a good thing.
Japanese Breakfast – Jubilee: Last week, I broke free from this record’s siren call. This week, it lured me back in.
Parliament – Mothership Connection: I don’t think I’ve ever listened to a P-Funk record straight through. That changes this week.
Maribou State – Fabric Presents Maribou State: I spent some time in the car with this playing loud. The grooves almost make me want to pick up the bass again.
Amelie Lens – Fabric Presents Amelie Lens: Seasonal blues had a fierce grip on me one day this week, but Amelie’s mix chased them away. I’m adding this to my list of music for when my brain is teetering on a dark place.
